Bangin’ £5 zine by current 3rd years. Go buy one! x
I recently put together a zine featuring students work from my course at Brighton University to raise funds for our degree show in June.
A5, 36 page full colour zine, printed on off white recycled stock. Featuring the work of 33 different artists, including new work from me, Alex Catt and Harry Mitchell.
It’s available to buy here. Do us a favour and pick one up! Any re-blogs would be greatly appreciated.
Kinky Knickers!
I absolutely love Mary Portas!
She has recently created an entirely British lingerie brand: Kinky knickers. All the materials are British and the knickers themselves are manufactured in the UK. The aim is to kick start a recovery in British manufacturing.
They are available in three colours of Nottingham stretch lace; black, ivory, and bright pink. I’ve had my eye on the bright pink ones (obviously), but you can’t buy a pair of these knickers anywhere - they’re completely sold out! Although will be back in stock at ASOS, Boots, House of Fraser, John Lewis, Liberty, Marks & Spencer and Selfridges this month.

Mary has raised some important issues by launching this brand. Firstly, the impact on our economy by buying non british - “People say manufacturing will never come back, but you can make it come back. Marks & Spencer sells 61 million pairs of knickers a year: all imported. Put a million of those back into the UK. Sort it out!” - Mary Portas.
And secondly, the ethical impact when buying into cheap, foreign labour. We all think about our impact on animals and the enviroment - I eat organic chicken and free range eggs because i don’t want to buy into the cheap, cruel chicken industry - it just seems greedy. But what about what we’re doing to people? We all know that cheap foreign labour often means harsh conditions for the workers for very little pay.
It seems that retail is way behind the times when it comes to manufacturing. Are we really okay with into a cruel, cheap, non british industry? don’t get me wrong i’m not anti-cheap (i’m a student after all!), just anti the cheapness that comes at the price of ethical values.
Portas has no financial stake in the Kinky Knicker brand – any profit is injected back into the business, and her pants, which retail at £10, are of a quality that a less generous business would sell at three times the price.
So hopefully by buying into this brand we are showing that we are finally saying no to cheap, unethical labour & saying yes to kickstarting british manufacturing again.
Anonymous asked: Could you give me some advice? I've been given a list of words that i have to start a photography project with. I was wondering if you could give your input of what you would do? Even if it's just a word :) The words are; Facades, Geometric, Neon, Shade, Torso, Hieroglyphics, Mobile, Vessel, Gesture and Juxtaposition. Thanks :)
Hmm. I think the best way to go about it is to really think about what your passion is - what do you want to photograph?
I’m pretty sure you could fit your passion/interest into any of those briefs. The only way to produce work that you’ll be proud of & want to create is if you’re interested in the subject & have a natural motivation and passion to create it. Hope that makes sense! x
Everyone come to our show! It’s an exhibition of work from second year BA Photography, Moving Image, Critical Fine Art Practice and Sculpture students.
Opening night is Friday 16th, all welcome.
YAY!
I’ve entered The Times Eureka Photography Competition & they’ve posted my entry on their blog. Lovely!
The enclosed image is a photogram - essentially a camera-less photograph, created in my local river. I used the elements around me such as water, sand, silt, pebbles and moon light to create this, as a response to the environment.
One of the most interesting elements for me is how this image represents and reflects the sky, and solar space. The image for me is very elemental - it interesting to me that natural engineering has helped to create this image.
The image hasn’t been edited or manipulated in any way, it has simply been scanned in so I could send it to you.
